Introduction
Popular music culture has evolved and encompassed several genres of music. The popular music culture is characterized by an increased display of offensiveness in content that certain people and cultures find not appropriate to them. The American popular culture is related to the history of the African-Americans, thus most of the content relates to their lives and how they grew up. The popular music, thus depicts violence and sex in the society which people deem as offensive, but it is the actual life of the people that they passed through (Wall 129).
The paper shall be looking at the reason why artists need to be given free rein in producing and displaying works that are offensive, objectionable, or disparaging of certain people’s beliefs and values
Analysis
Offensive popular music promotes negative behaviors among teenagers in the United States at the same time portray wrong moral standards of the people. Popular music brings in scenes of portraying violence, homophobic, racist, and sexism in the lyrics and videos thus impacting on the morals of the youth. Such negative messages create a wrong perception among the young people as they grow up. Additionally, the type of message passed through the popular music leads to erosion of morals among the youth (Holt 96).
The society looks at the cause of erosion of morals as a negative effect of popular music in the United States. The music artists play an important role in shaping the generations of the US since they act as icons to the people. The young generation looks at the artists as their icons and mentors thus they dress, act, and want to live like them. As a result, the young people end up being misled in the ways of sex, substance abuse, and racism. The society finds these types of characteristics of popular music as discouraging to the development of the society (Rojek 36).
Popular music on the other hand is an important means of expressing the life of a person. The platform is appreciated by many people. As a result, popular music is important to the society in explaining the history of the nation. It is, therefore, important for artists to be given a free reign in producing music and displaying works that are deemed offensive to certain people’s beliefs and values. The offensive way in which popular music is presented creates the whole reality about the facts stated in the lyrics or the videos. Scrapping of scenes that show racism, sexual offenses, or homophobic will only show that the society is running away from its past which need to be embraced and talked about (Holt 24).
Conclusion
Artists require a free rein to produce content that they desire since it only creates the real perception of the previous and the current situation of the society. Avoiding such cases will only drive society back since there will be no desire to change from the past. A free rein on the hand will increase the creativity in the art of music and display the uniqueness of the US popular music culture more. Currently, US popular music is most listened type of music in the whole world, showing the strength of the culture to the whole world. Restricting such productions will reduce on quality and drive more artists from the music world (Rojek 45).
