Introduction
The United Nations Security Council to me is like a big whale that lay deep in the ocean for a very long time only to wake up in the recent years sending huge waves across the sea that contains many world nations under the UN. In the recent years, the United Nations Security Council has triggered the legal science (Bashir & Lim, 2013). However, the United Nations body remained in its place with the same powers as initially intended but with the powers compromised by some nations that took permanent membership in the council. As such, the body’s aim to promote multilateral diplomacy and the peace for the world was brought to an end.
Summary
Critique
I do agree with the author on the stance that the United Nations Security Council should avoid political affiliations because politics play no prioritized role while the safety and security are at stake. However, why does the author only focus on the council instead of addressing the egoistic nations? In any case, the council is the nation’s themselves and without them, there is no council (Schrijver, 2007). Therefore, there is a need to address nations individually and create a plan to talk them out of their egoistic stances in the United Nations Security Council. Once the major leaders in the council agree to focus on the council’s initial agenda on multilateral diplomacy, the council’s role will be reinstated (Buckley, 2013). On the other hand, the nations that have been given temporary membership could also be addressed in the article critiquing the United Nations Security Council. The small nations could also be blamed for allowing the veering off of the council’s aims for their own selfish interests. While the temporary members benefit individually by being in the council, the effects of not driving the council to the intended route result in the neglect of the other many nations that could never find their way into the council membership.
Conclusion
The text, despite dealing with a widely debated international issue, contains some data that could not be depended on since they are not cited and referenced. The author uses percentages that have not been accounted. For instance, the author says that top countries in the United Nations Security Council contribute 60% of the military expenses in all parts of the world with 40% coming from the United States (Buckley, 2013). Such information should be referenced and an in-text citation provided. Citations are important in case the reader wants to further study on the discussed subject. The author, according to the text, is most likely to be a university lecturer dealing with different research topics such as politics. The language that the author uses shows that they understand the main issues affecting the world. With the courage to expose such weaknesses of an international security council, the author can be relied upon to advocate for political revolutions using tools such as the media.
