This research paper is one which is meant to show my individual leadership assessment and further to show how the findings from my test may be advantageous in an instance that I am able to advance in my nursing practice.
Assessing Emotional Intelligence
Authentic Leadership
Authentic Leadership is the defined as the kind of leadership that leads to the proper and more comfortable working environment for the various staff of the hospital or institution (Shirey, 2006). However, these styles of leadership may differ in one way or the other, depending on whether the style is transformational, transactional or an authentic leadership style.
Transformational style of leadership is defined as the type of leadership that occurs in cases that the leader carries out the changes in the institution by him or her listening to the thoughts of the subordinates (Shirey, 2006) while transactional leadership is defined as the kind of leadership that the leader brings about the changes at the institution by him or her being a supervisor to his or her subordinates which leads them to have to comply with the changes that are brought about by him giving them rewards in case they perform as expected and get punished in cases they perform contrary to the expectations(Judge & Piccolo, 2004). Authentic leadership on the other hand is the leadership style where the leader is cooperates with the subordinate in their workings and this in turn leads to him or her gaining their trust and this leads to them supporting the leader in his or her works (Shirey, 2009). From these definitions, it can be deduced that the major distinctions of these forms of leadership is that transformational leadership encourages empathy between the leader and his subordinate where transactional form of leadership encourages the leader to be always supervise his subordinates while authentic leadership is based on cooperation and trust amongst the leader and the subordinates(Watson, 2004).
Authentic leadership style may be considered to be advantageous in my future roles in advanced nursing practice, since it encourages trust amongst the leader and the subordinates and due the trust the working environment in the institution will be one favourable one for both the me and my subordinates(Shirey, 2006). This is since the trust will in turn lead to cooperation and hence this increased teamwork between me and my other workmates will lead to better yields from our actions (Akerjordet & Severinsson, 2008)..
Definition of Leadership
As for me, leadership is the ability of me being able to lead my fellow workmates to perform their assigned duties and do this in a humane and enthusiastic manner that will in turn lead to them being able to carry out their assigned duties in a manner that will achieve the best results (Akerjordet & Severinsson, 2008). From this I tend to see that it will be advantageous to my future role in advanced nursing practice since by me taking into account the working conditions of my fellow workmates, I will be able to promote teamwork amongst my team and this will reciprocate in us meeting our set goals and increasing our levels of cooperation (Watson, 2004). My enthusiasm will tend to increase my teams self-efficacy which will hence this will enable us meet the organizations goals and visions.
This may further be inferred from the peer article that encouraged the leaders to have in place measures that encouraged the use of ethical rigour which allowed the subordinate to always have understood what they were consenting to, allowing him or her to participate voluntarily and for him or her to be assured of the confidentiality of the process (Skinner & Spurgeon, 2005).
