Genre
As a Social Action
___________________
“Genre” is a term that is determined as somewhat related to categorization, classification and segregation.
Miller:
“The categorization that the society knows at present is related to how they understand the concept of culture as part of the classification that particular groups are noted for”
“Sound categorization of genre should be based on how one functions and how one embraces his personal role in making a difference to the society as it develops”
Overall, Miller points out that genre should be able to identify well with the concept of ‘function’ as it does provide a distinct impact on how people are supposed to be recognized and understood based on what they do and not based on who they seem to be based on social stereotyping.
Important Points:
- Culture is a common point of human existence; hence, it is just right to assume that it affects how a person thinks, acts and speaks, thus affecting the way he identifies himself with others in the community.
- The concept of ‘function’ as point of classification helps provide presentation on how one person identifies himself and his capacities with the things he is able to accomplish that could largely affect the lives of others.
- Function need not be dependent on work; it simply implies the distinct option by which people tend to serve others’ needs especially for the sake of being a part of the community.
- Utilizing function and culture as means of classification or genre determination is more effective and fair than utilizing the different elements that determine race and gender as points of human classification.
