In the contemporary world, social media has become a very common platform for communication (Stout Para 2). This is a platform that is commonly utilized by teens and adolescents. Face book is one of the commonly used social media channels. Many argue that this technology has greatly improved communication and social networking amongst individuals. However, I am of the opinion that social media has negative effects on the socialization process.
First of all, I am of the opinion that social media greatly weakens the social ties in the society. This is because individuals using this platform do not realize the need for personal associations with other individuals. However, they spend most of their time checking out their statuses and updating their information on the sites (Keller Para 3). The platform might enable people to link up, but it does not encourage face-to-face communication. This tends to create a virtual circle of friends but no real friends.
Social media also tends to corrupt the moral codes in the users (Knowles Para 10). This is mainly because there is a lot of information flowing on the internet. There is no control or regulation on the content that can be accessed or shared through the sites. As such, social media can act as a platform for moral corruption. Other vices such as cyber bullying, sharing of explicit information, and other unethical practices can be propagated through the social media platforms such as face book. This clearly indicates that though the social media platforms can help in linking people from different backgrounds, it also offers an avenue through which much negative influence can be spread. Though the social sites are inevitable in the modern society, it might be important to regulate its usage so as to avoid the negative implications.
