Introduction
The ranking system has taken away the credibility of the school system. The focus have changed, and the result is “students are no longer the focus of schools but platforms for competition” for the benefit of the schools. This paper establishes the un- credibility of the ranking system, and that the school board of Fairfax County was right in eliminating ranking, despite ranking being a common practice in the current schooling system. Higher-ranking students take a positive view on rankings system. These are a good thing, from a ranking perspective as it makes it easy to identify strengths in an instant. However, some students who rank well in education loose the focus on life and instead assume that being in a well, ranked position is an automatic sign of success. Though these may be true in some aspects, it does undermine other forms of education that do not rely on ranking. Lower ranking students, on the other hand, are most likely to be, affected by the thought that by being low in ranking they are automatic failures. Unfortunately, in most cases low ranking students will give up or change focus even when their ranking is, only based on certain aspects of their education.
The expected result of the ranking system is to make students work harder. However, amidst peers knowing you are not that bright the ranking system in reverse makes the students anxious and in some situations depressed. Ranking systems in general are not credible means of determining academic excellence. While academic education chooses to educate students on particular topics of interest, by relying on ranking to determine success is in a way shallow. Reason being the ranking system only tells the person capabilities on a singular factor. However, it ignores all the other factors that determine success in any field. These things cannot be, easily measured, and ranked. An example attitude to life or person skills but instead need to be, developed and success measure with the outcome of the students. Ranking system is not only un-credible but also designed to make it easier for the academics to highlight their hard work. It is a fact that ranking is, used by schools and colleges to position them in the society for future acclamation and business. However, the student who should be the focus of the education system, in most cases gets lost in the ranking. Usually, what follows the ranking is not the reality of life, but the shame of failure and anxiety of how to survive the ranking carnage.
The ranking system is no longer a credible means of evaluating student's positions and as such, Fairfax County school board was right in eliminating ranking system. As stated ranking system was set up on the basis that competition was good. However, this is not true, the reason being the ranking system only emphasized on competitiveness and rewarded the competition these further proved the ranking system could not be, relied upon sinking it credibility to oblivion. While the ranking system had a place in the past its place in the 21st century system of education, its place no longer exist. The ranking system did work well with bringing people to school. However, it failed miserably in ensuring all of them were educated to the same standards under safe ensuring environment. It is such issues of failure that points at how we can no longer be, assured of the ability of the ranking system. Thus, the reliability of the ranking system falls into question and Fairfax school board was right in its decision to eliminate it. In conclusion, high-ranking students and low ranking students get, affected adversely in terms of attitude by, the ranking system. These factors make the ranking system not credible, and it is only, designed to make things easier. With these arguments as the basis, it is thus right to state that the school board of Fairfax County acted appropriately in eliminating ranking. By these, the school in a way returned the credibility back to the schooling system as a place of education and not rivalry and competition.
