A fallacy is considered as a poor logical statement or an invalid reasoning which could be used by some people to persuade, deceive and manipulate other people due to its appealing nature. In some cases, other people are committed to believe in the fallacies unintentionally due to the lack of knowledge or awareness about the validity of the logic or reasoning used in these arguments. Fallacies are common and could be recognized in advertisements of products, political debates and several arguments which are used in schools or other institutions. In general, most people, including me, are affected by fallacies since these arguments sound appealing. Most people only acknowledge the poor reasoning or invalid logic within these statements when they are informed about the types and nature of fallacies.
There are numerous examples of fallacies in the television and in other media. One example of fallacy is the use of popular icons in the commercial of products. In this case, followers or fans of the popular icons are expected to like the products they are promoting. This argument is considered as an appeal to authority type of fallacy. In this example, people who admire the popular icons should also accept the products they promote. It is an appeal to authority since it is based on the idea that the popular icon also accepts the product although sometimes, it is not the case. Another example is the bandwagon fallacy or the appeal to popularity. In this example, products are being promoted through the use of the fact that many people are using or admiring it. It is a clever way of persuading the audience to accept the product since most of the people are also accepting it.
