Roosevelt approach to solving the great depression was successful although it faced may challenges. The economic conditions in America had deteriorated, and it saw increased unemployment rates. More than 20 million Americans were out of work and underemployed. The democratic nomination of FDR that promised them a “new deal” gave the Americans a new hope. It promised American to take them out of the Depression. FDR formulated his policies that came in two programs: first new deal and second new deal.
FDR offered hope to many Americans with his optimistic attitude, but he faced many challenges from Washington because people who had supported him had self-interests of being influential but they failed and that is why they criticized FDR administration. FDR tried by enacting legislation that aimed to bring money to the Americans. He ensured banks were working and stable within his 100 days of administration. This First New Deal was promising, and it stabilized the American financial system. It provided jobs and relief to the Americans who were suffering. The capitalist economy re-energized again with the First New Deal. FDR saw the passage of Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) that aimed to offer farmers with incentives.
FDR tried to reduce poverty in the rural areas. Rural electrification saw the dams produce hydroelectric power that went to the rural areas. This was through Rural Electrification Administration (REA). FDR sought to get up the American industry into its feet, but the legislation was so controversial. It saw critics from both the left and right that attacked him. FDR wanted to influence the Supreme Court, but he failed. The American Liberty League tarred the First New Deal and termed it as an assault to America’s free enterprise and capitalism. Senator Long criticized FDR for not doing enough to the most hit. The second new deal ensured unionization of workers through the Wagner Act. Despite the policies that FDR implemented during his administration, the economy did not come to his feet. By 1940, unemployment rates were still high, and stock prices had not recovered. This led the economists to conclude that FDR was not successful in his approach towards ending the Depression in America.
