(1). The video discusses why come people believed that Chinese tourists have such a bad reputation. The commentators in the video, while not dismissing the idea that Chinese tourists do act in certain ways that others nations find rude, argue that the behaviors are based on different aspects of China’s culture, history and society. For example, one commentator says that the Cultural Revolution forced many Chinese to become rude as a means of survival, while another commentator basically says what others nations find rude is not in China and so there needs to be a mutual understanding to get past simple labelling of behavior and stereotyping.
(2). This article discusses the different perceptions of what is good customer service between Americans and Japanese. The author further discusses how the lack of attention to customer service detail in Hawaii can and has adversely affected Japanese tourism to the state. For instance, the common American attitude of not providing assistance if not asked is somewhat disturbing to Japanese tourists who are accustomed to service personnel to anticipate the customers wants and provide the services proactively. American improvements in cultural sensitivity in service will go a long way to attracting more Japanese tourists.
(3). This article examines the positives and negatives of the growing tourism market for Iceland. While the author suggests increasing access to anyone that has the desire to see Iceland is an important positive; the list of negatives are quickly outweighing the benefits. Those negatives include the “Disneyland-ification” of previously serene destinations, the exclusion and manipulation of local vendors by cruise ships and tour agencies and the increase of pollution brought by DIY travelers. The author suggests that one way to control the negative is for the government to listen to and consider the concerns of the locals in balancing their interests with those of the tourists.

This article begins with the idea that the services tour guide in China offers foreign and domestic clients must be different because each has a different understanding, namely none or limited to foreign clients, of Chinese culture. Accordingly, from the time that a guide first meets a foreign guest they must employ different skills and strategies that they would use for domestic clients. These skills, including having a deep knowledge about China in order to provide good explanation to foreign clients; as well as a good understanding of the foreign clients’ home country, in order to avoid cultural mistakes.
(5). This article examines the need for people that work in the tourism industry, especially cultural tourism, need to have and constantly develop their intercultural competence and skill sets. This in necessary because as it is becoming easier for people to travel, work, and live abroad there is also a growing need for people that facilitate travel, namely the tourism and hospitality industries to have the expertise to allow people make the most of their travels especially in regards to the increased desire of people to understand and interact with the culture they are interacting with and experiencing.
