At least fifteen people were injured and Sixty-four students arrested on Friday as two opposing groups of demonstrators crashed with University police at Fairmont University. This occurred when demonstrations seeking to influence the decision of the board of regents on cultural diversity classes turned violent.
The Board of Regents postponed the decision on whether or not to allow for a class in cultural diversity for all students and faculty until their next meeting scheduled for next month. The regents refused to comment on the reason for the delay in judgment on the controversial issue, with the regents’ president Clifford Eisel saying that the board will not talk about the issue until a decision was made. “Until we make our decision on faculty training, we will not discuss it,” said Clifford Eisel.
Two groups with opposing views on the issue of cultural diversity classes tried to advance towards each other, and when campus police officers sought to separate them, they pelted them with stones and bottles provoking a confrontation with the officers.
“They shouted at each other even louder, and some of them began throwing things, mostly rocks and bottles.” Said University police chief R. Barclay Peterson.
Jonathan Walterson, president of Students Against Racism, a group that advocates for the introduction of diversity classes in the campus, blamed the police for the violence. He claimed that had the officers not advanced towards the rioters, they would have remained loud but peaceful.
Walterson said that the demonstration against racism in the campus would continue until the board of regents passed the proposal to demand mandatory classes on diversity.
“We’re done negotiating with them. Now it is time to cause trouble,” Said Walterson minutes before he was arrested.
Brian Allen, the president of American Students Organization, a group opposed to the mandating of the diversity training said that the demonstrations would go on.
"Nobody at this university needs additional training in diversity. America went through a long, drawn-out civil rights fight. Many of our faculty aren’t even from this country,” he said.
Peterson confirmed that the police are not against the rallies but cautioned against unlawful protests. “They can hold them all they want, as long as they get a permit from the university. But we don’t want them to get out of hand.” Said Peterson
The arrested students are expected to be released on bail of $500 each.
