Discussion 2
I am strongly against of the legalization of illicit drugs in the United States. I believe that such global trend is the legalization of illicit drugs is contraindicated for our society. Unfortunately, the level of reflection, self-knowledge and self-control in our society is low, our people do not turn to the spiritual practice, so this recognition of drugs would be simply disastrous for the US people.
The main advantages of legalizing drugs are the taxes obtained by legal sells. But even this advantage is contradictory. Legalization of marijuana in two US states - Colorado and Washington - has not brought positive results. The black market for drugs has not been eliminated, and the number of teens who use marijuana, even increased. Therefore the legalization of drugs does not eliminate the drug use or prevents kids from using it.
Corporate crimes are rather unusual manifestation of international crime and associated usually with business, corporations, power and other professional activities. Criminals of this category even got the name of “White-collar crimes”.
Two former BP managers were charged for the oil environment disaster in 2010 that occurred in Gulf of Mexico and has led to the death of 11 people. According to an internal investigation conducted by BP's security staff, reasons for the accident were identified as errors of the working personnel, technical malfunctions and error design of the oil platform (Stempel, “Ex-BP Well Managers Must Face Gulf Spill Criminal Charges”). Thus, the company have managed to get a $18,7 million settlement, which according to Conathan’s article and provided facts is insignificant for the company and will not in any way help the environment (Conathan, “The True Value of BP’s $18.7 Billion Settlement”). After the accident, the water area of the Gulf of Mexico was one third closed to fishing, thus there was introduced almost a total ban on fishing. Oil leaked out even in water reserves and the coastal wetlands, which play an important role in maintaining vital functions of wildlife and migratory birds. Therefore, it should be noted that the damages of this environment disaster are enormous and $18,7 million paid in 5 years will not cover it.
