Fixed vs. Growth Mindset
I like the issue of human lives being daily shaped by the kind of mindset that they consciously or unconsciously choose to adopt. Psychologists have agreed on the existence of two types of mentality, fixed and growth mindsets. These have been developed in attempts to explain beliefs on personality and intelligence and to try to define different traits that are existent in populations today. I like the fact that the fixed mindset is based on the belief that a person’s characteristics are permanently carved in stone while the growth mindset is for the fact that basic qualities are cultivatable through a person’s efforts. A fixed mindset believes in personal intelligence that one continually struggles to prove. On the contrary, the growth mindset believes that intelligence is something gained through continued effort and hard work. I wonder why these two explained kinds of mindset fail to explain the reasons for the existence of intellectually poor persons. It is obvious that is a particular group of individuals who do not fall into these two categories.
Clarifying Achievement Goals and Their Impact
I wonder why individual performance in the course of learning differ greatly yet the performance goals analyzed in the article seem to stem from an almost similar point of motivation. I like the fact that most individuals perform well in their courses mainly because it is important for them to perform well. Some factors similarly motivate people to perform well in there including the ability to attain the learning goals, ability goals, outcome goals among others. While these do not fully explain performances, I like the significance of the various objectives that learners try to meet in the course of their learning. Achievement of objectives and goals is, therefore, dependent on some both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators that together define individual performances.
