Question 1
The 1999 Rozin study concluded that there is a French paradox: the French derive pleasure from eating cheese and drinking wine while staying slim and healthy, while Americans obsess about food and its role in their health, yet are among the unhealthiest people in the developed world. . I think the same study if conducted today would still yield the same if not stronger, results.
Americans seem to be obsessed with consuming a “one size fits all” diet that pays more attention to what is printed on a little chart on the side of a package than they do on savoring a delicious meal with friends and family. Luckily I am blessed with a family that enjoys each other and the food they share together. This makes the difference all the more obvious to me.
Question 2
Studies show that fear of public speaking ranks higher than the fear of dying. I guess this means that most people at a funeral would rather be in the coffin than delivering the eulogy'' Jerry Seinfeld .
I found facing my fears and acknowledging them to myself was the first, most important step in overcoming them. Honesty is essential in order to overcome a fear. I find that especially true when it comes to public speaking. When I have to speak in public, I am afraid that my notes will and my presentation materials fail me.
This starts with knowing my subject matter and preparing my presentation materials well in advance. The best thing I know of is to talk about my subject to everyone; family, friends, and even to myself in the mirror. The next step is knowing my audience; doing a presentation for my class and doing one for a business meeting require two very different styles, even when the subject and presentation materials are the same. Finally, I put this all aside the day before, lay out my clothes and get a good night’s sleep.
