Food is among some of the basic needs of people across the world. When people lack the access to food and proper nutrition, their dignity and humanity are compromised. The report on food security in America indicates that food insecurity is currently an important issue that requires the attention of various stakeholders. Lack of access to food and quality sources of nutrition implies that the individuals have to skip meals. Therefore, they fail to get the required quotient of food. This can be confirmed as the Reuters report indicates that almost half of all people reported having experienced food insecurity lost weight . This is an indication of adverse personal harm to individual health.
Given the negative effect that food insecurity has to personal wellbeing, the overall effect to the country is immense. In the American case, for instance, a total of 17 million people lacked access to enough food in 2011 . According to the report, this is a trend that is increasing annually. The implication here is that more Americans are experiencing adverse health outcomes such as losing weight than before. Given that politicians are pushing for the reduction of government expenditure on food stamps, the under-fed members of the society are likely to develop a sense of injustice. When such feelings arise, the community not only harbors an unhealthy population, but also becomes unstable.
The current American model appertaining health care implies that only individuals who can afford healthcare rates are offered the services. Applying the principles of distributive justice, in this case, means that the people with no access to proper nutrition need to be offered health-related help indiscriminately. To this end, therefore, I would be ready to provide such individuals information on cheaper, but healthier food options. Besides, I would provide the individuals dietary supplements that would help to deliver the required nutrients for individual wellbeing.
