Beach cleanup is a conservative way of keeping the environment clean. It helps in cleaning the habitat of small animals, insects, and birds that stay and feed at the beach. It is a preventive measure that ensures harmful waste products do not get into the ocean and spoil the marine animals’ habitat. Things like plastic bags cause harm to the fish when ingested since it does not decompose. Chemicals products used in cosmetic products pollute the water and harms marine life. Constant cleanup of the beach prevents these from happening. Different beaches have their way of cleaning up. They employ people to do the cleanup. Self-Help groups or habitats groups who volunteer to keep the beach clean also play an important role. Presence of dustbins in some public beaches directs the tourist on the appropriate places to keep their waste items.
As stated in the introduction, there are various ways of cleaning up the beach. Employing people to do the work is the most used techniques; however, most public beaches lack funds to employ these people on a permanent basis. The other people who assist are beach conservatives. They compose of schools, wildlife clubs, and volunteers. They have a day or more in their calendar designated for the process and a confirmation from the beach caretakers. As they collect the litter, they educate people on the importance of keeping the areas clean. Lastly, there are the beach lovers, who consist of people who just love the beach and its environs. These people volunteer to pick up the litter even without being asked to or even without seeking consent of the authorities. To them, the beach is their responsibility, and they do it from their heart.
For the assignment, the group picked Ford Ord State Beach at Seaside, California. It was the nearest beach, and most of us are quite familiar with it. The first process was to seek the consent of the authority and inform them on our intentions. Such a gesture is advisable for purposes of safety and keeping the administration informed in case something goes wrong, maybe someone gets lost or hurt, they will help us. The second process is coming up with a date for the exercise. After several debates, 21 October 2014 was chosen as the designated day. The third process was arranging the items to use for collecting and organizing the sample. As always, safety comes first. Gloves and boots were necessary for the protection against sharp objects, such as broken glasses and plastic bags and baskets for collection of the litter. Additionally, a net for collection of samples washed into the seashores was also necessary.
The exercise began early in the morning on the set date and took a few hours for the whole process. Our area of collection was 100m by 50 m. For efficient collection, each member walked parallel to the beach picking trash on his or her left and right. Everyone had his or her plastic bag to minimize the time lost gathering the debris on one bag. The process ended at around noon and headed to the lab later. In the lab, we weighed the collection first then started separating them in different categories for instance plastic bottles, glasses and plastic paper. The process began at 2.30 pm and ended at 3.30 pm. We sat down with the data and composed a report about it.
The report gathered a few things. As per the time of collection, the beach seemed clean. We did not collect a lot of litter since it was not during the holidays, and the beach was not that busy. We came across four caps of soda weighing a total of 8.7g. There were 20 wrappers weighing a total of 63.8g. There were 11 paper/wood found and weighed 7.7g. There were 13 plastic bottles weighing a total of 21g. These are all the items found.
In conclusion, the act of keeping the environment clean is something every human being should poses for future generations to enjoy. Just as everyone deserves human rights, so does the environment. It is the habitat to millions of species and unlike humans; they are not in apposition to make it better. Only we can assist them by keeping it clean. Use of dustbin and recycling items is one of the major way. At the rate at which people are polluting the environment, some things, such as animals, will just be seen on history books. Everyone should have the spirit of cleanliness and consideration towards the environment.
