The forest pathways are a means of transitioning from a forest and park environment to a built environment. Connecting the two environments operationalizes the main concept, which is to bring life and nature into the built environment and thereby fostering an interaction within a historical building. The forest pathways, as conceptualized inside the building, will be drawn as curved lines that guide the pedestrian through a succession of spaces that create the impression of houses built along a forest path. The pathway will move around columns as a pedestrian moves around trees in a forest.
Water Fire:
The inspiration for this scheme came from one of the most important tourist attraction in Providence, and that is Waterfire by Barnaby Evans. I observed the movement of people along the riverbanks of Waterfire, how they stand around it and watch the show, and also how they interact with each other. Based on this observation, I came up with the idea of circulating around the around the lake and people’s interaction with the building. The movement of people within the building will be effected by creating a ramp in the middle of the building. The ramp will connect all the floors. The event space will be in the middle of the ramp on the first floor. Beyond connecting the floors, the ramp will create an area for everyone to stand and watch the show.
Past:
The Substation: the substation is a room of the electrical generation and transmission system. The Turbine Hall: the Turbine Hall consists of a huge furnaces powered by hard coal and lignite, which generates electricity and in some cases district heating.Lb Houses: Electrical machines that are responsible for saving and distributing the power.
Future:
Substation Garden: An interior garden that has a cafe and seating area where people gather. The garden will be open area in the summer and closed and warm in the winter.
Turbine Garden: An open garden that has many living stations. The main idea of the Turbine Garden is to pull sunlight and fresh air into the building.
The Gathering House: This will be a gathering area that includes the lobby, bar and restaurant, where people gather and experience the beauty of the industrial history.
House: Each room in the hotel will be calling a House. Each room will have a different atmosphere.
Living Station: A living Station is a natural mechanism that treats and recycles river water and gray water.
This wheel shows the main concept of the project, which is gathering and interacting. There are three important elements: people, history, and nature. These elements will be the guide in each project. This wheel leads me think about the best way to bring people to the building, and allow them to interact with each other and with nature in a historical place.
