The video on HIPAA Regulations discusses some general instructions on how patients’ private information should be treated. I totally agree that the duties of any health care facility worker go far beyond the time spent with the patient, and keeping their private information safe and confidential is not less important than providing medical care itself. That is why to my mind enforcing the HIPAA Rules was very reasonable and necessary move. In short, HIPAA Law protects any health information of people using medical services and allows patients themselves to access this information and use it in a way they want. The compliance with the Law is mandatory and the consequences of violating it may be severe. Some practical examples of following the HIPAA standards include using single shits or barcodes instead of signing shits that include patient’s name, keeping patients’ record away from easily accessible places but where only those who need it can obtain it. With the advancement of technology unnecessary exposure of health information became even more likely, and that is why this issue should be paid even more attention. For instance, computer screens should be protected with passwords and not visible to general public. It is also important to log off a computer after you finish your work. Another significant aspect is not to discuss any health related information in public areas, where other people can hear it. More private and isolated place should be used for that. Finally, when the information is not needed anymore it has to be destroyed in a proper reliable way, and not for instance thrown away to ‘unsafe dumpsters’. All these things look quite simple, but are definitely important and must not be overlooked. I believe trainings on how to treat not only patients but also their health information are crucial to each health worker as each of us is personally responsible for following the standards of privacy and security of our patients’ personal data.
