The space should be rented for the purposes of the production of the musical Hair because this musical is intended to spread love among people. The local theatre company should be allowed to rent the chapel, not only because it is closed for economic reason, but also in order for people to see that the church is accepting modern art as a way of approaching to the masses. Local organizations are already allowed to hold meetings in this space and a theatre company should not be an exception.
Hair contains some language and adult situations which could be deemed inappropriate by some member of the community or the congregation, but is only a presumption, not a fact. Moreover, the content of this musical could be seen as metaphorical and as a way of spreading love among people. The story revolves around life and the celebration of life and pointless death is judged. ““Hair” as counterculture symbol of emancipation is the metaphor that intends to make Hair a play about freedom among the yippie hippies who look to be the last hope of an uptight Great Society” (Fritscher). This musical questions the values of people who prefer to be members of the mass than individuals. People who organize wars count on the masses to go to the actual fight. The protagonists from Hair are only spreading love and sharing their sense of freedom. All of the actors in this musical are supporting the unique idea which leads to raising the public awareness of the fact that they should think freely.
People confess their sins to priests in churches already and Hair could be seen as a confession of the whole generation of the young who do not see the future and who believe that it is being taken away from them. “The kids of “Hair” are cuddly, sweet, madcap and ecstatic. They’re also angry, hostile, confused and scared as hell — and not just of the Vietnam War, which threatens to devour the male members of their tribe” (Brantley). The situation in the society is changing for the worse and the young feel the pressure of being forced to live dull lives and not being able to express themselves in any way, not to mention in the creative one.
The parish chapel should rent the space to the local theatre company because it will attract many people and their awareness about the public good and about their own individualities will be raised. The mission of the church is to educate people about morality and about leading Christ-like lives and the musical Hair does not inspire any kind of inappropriate behavior.
