This study seeks to unearth some underlying issues in arts and literature development. Since time immemorial, symbolism has been thought to be playing a critical role in the development of literature, both directly and indirectly (Gait 29). As a matter fact, this study would try to engage various literary aspects, particularly those literary genres that have used symbolism not just in an ordinary sense to the sense of achieving worldwide accolade. Well, it is an undeniable fact that symbolism is crucial aspect of literature, as a matter of fact, writers can attest to it. Even though people do not seem to understand what symbolism generally constitutes, they use it on daily basis, unknowingly. In the same length, this study will also help people identify what symbolism is and try to give them practical instances or scenarios on situations where they might have used them unknowingly.
Symbolism functions in a simple way, especially to those who understand it; it’s basically an object coming in for or representing another, thus revealing a hybrid meaning that is quite deep and more conclusive, every writer finds joy in using symbolism to develop a succinct plot, it’s quite simple and ready for writers consumption (Gale Literary Databases). To demonstrate the importance of symbolism in plot development, take for example a spoken or written word, all these can effectively apply symbolism. For clarity purposes, plots are basically drawn in written literature or acted plays, well, if all these accepts the use of symbolism then why not use it. This gives a succinct clue as to why symbolisms are widely used in work of arts (Wellington 44). Just as earlier mentioned, symbolism can reciprocate in several forms, therefore, it has the capacity of taking into consideration the social and political context out of which a text was drawn form.
In other terms, symbolism is a more flexible stylistic device for all writers, it can chip at all moments. However, for one to understand symbolism better, they must be able to review the context at which it has been used, failure of which leads to deceiving conclusions. Owing to the fact that symbolism is a work of literature, it heavily depends on creativity, therefore, a reader must think creatively as well. Furthermore, that’s the major reason why writers heavily depend on it lest they would end up with very shallow plots that are quite boring (Gait 33). All writers persist to remain creative, probably the reason why they majorly use symbols in the works.
