What rules and conventions are customers expected to follow in a supermarket? How does the behavior of Queenie and her friends violate these rules?
The name Queenie has given by Sammy to the beautiful girl who takes two of her friends to the supermarket in bathing suits. She is completely new person for Sammy, and he gets inspired by her tantalizing and regal appearance. The customers need to follow a dress code according to the rules and conventions of the supermarket. For service, every customer has to wear shirt and shoes as it is a need. However, Queenie and her friends violate rules by wearing bathing suits in the supermarket. That is why, for breaking the policy of supermarket is a disrespecting behavior for everyone. The sharp contrast of the era in which set standards of behavior and outlook were firmer and more conventional. As in that era, wearing hat in church by women and men were responsible for taking them off as needed.
How do Miss Brill's observations of the people around her give us insight into her own character? Why do you suppose she doesn't interact with anyone of the people she observes?
The observation in the park on other people through Miss Brill perception reveals that how different players are playing part in the company. The people in this study explain that Brill recognize people through their clothes as she doesn't know anyone in the park. Costumes are the biggest tool of observation for her to find anyone present in the park. Following are the few insights of the Miss Brill's observation:
• Although she is an elderly woman with no male companion like other women have, therefore biggest emphasis is on her status of unmarried.
• The two pairs observation by her helps to limelight through comparing her own loneliness and her own old age.
• The old man treatment as knocked over by the youth also suggests the last fate of Miss Brill well ahead in the story when she is ill-treated by youth.
The Miss Brill situation is more relevant to her own observation, she is more like a similar person as had observed herself earlier.
