The Setting: The story is set in the District of Columbia USA at the historic Vernon Estates.
The Inspiration: According to the author, the idea for Buried Deception came to the author in 2005 when her family took a three-week home-school tour to the East coast and they made a stop at Mount Vernon. She fell in love with everything about Mount Vernon, especially since it was in summer, right from the beautiful foliage to the blooming trees to the wealth of the history on the grounds. She marvelled at George Washington’s innovations as she walked through the mansion as she wondered which of the displayed antiques were original and which ones were replicas. That thought led to another and she wondered what it would mean if one of the antiques at Mount Vernon was found out to be actually a fake. And with that naughty thought, the idea of Buried Deception came to birth.
Novella’s Synopsis: “Buried Deception” is a contemporary novella with an almost typical storyline. It features Samantha Steele, a widow and an archaeology intern whose main goal is to provide, solely, for her children. Together with Nick Porter, an ex-cop haunted by his not so glamorous past, they discover that the artefact that was broken by Samantha’s troublesome son, was indeed, a counterfeit. Before making this discovery, Samantha is worried that she might lose her internship thanks to her son who seems to cause trouble everywhere he goes. Upon making the discovery that the broken relic is a mere counterfeit, both Samantha and Porter are forced to set their stubbornness aside; Samantha must accept that she needs help and Porter, the stubborn watchman must drop the guard he has built around his heart and let someone in. They are forced to come to an understanding and work together; rely on each other lest the results be more haunting than Porter’s past. The plot thickens as Samantha struggles to relinquish the control she has become accustomed to, to a man she hardly knows, as Porter learns to trust again and as they both learn to surrender to God.
According to Vickie McDonough, an award-winning author of 24 books, and novellas, Gina Conroy’s story of murder, of theft of priceless artefacts, of an ornery, of a little boy with an affinity for trouble is an extremely fast-paced novella that has it all. The reader is taken on an emotional ride of a lifetime. She summarizes the story as a charming and breath taking romance.
