Education in a different country extends further beyond classroom settings. Education has come to be increasingly a blend of academic, professional and personal experiences. Accordingly, in seeking to pursue education in a different country, one needs to be well adapted to different aspects of on- and off-campus experiences. Personally, I have gained a host of experiences in different contexts which has further enriched me at professional, academic and personal levels. To better explain how I would fit in a multicultural education in Spain, I will need to describe in further detail experiences I have accumulated over years in different learning settings. This essay aims, hence, to present in detail professional, academic and personal experiences I have gained in performing different roles and in different geographies and contexts.
Currently, I work as a flight paramedic for U.S. State Department in Iraq. Having over nine years of active, professional experience in prehospital setting, I plan to enhance my practical knowledge base by solid, academic experience in Spain. This objective of pursuing an international, multicultural education is justified by multiple reasons.
First, having completed a BA in Emergency Health Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, This recent academic degree has helped provide a solid conceptual background for a professional career spanning different geographies.
Second, in addition to current Iraq deployment, professional experiences include Paramedic Instructor at Laredo Community College and Base Clinical Lead for a rotary-wing program in Texas. By serving in different organizational cultures, I have gained deep insights at corporate, workgroup and interpersonal levels. For example, by offering paramedic services in Iraq, I gain cultural experiences on a daily basis by, at least, monitoring local cultural patterns and behaviors, a critical component in offering paramedic services for stakeholders of diverse backgrounds.
Third, I have had rich personal experiences gained over years by extensive traveling. Indeed, if anything in addition to expatriation could be of long-lasting value for enriching one's professional and personal experiences, independent traveling is one most important factor. In addition to my current deployment in Iraq, I have been to countries spanning four continents including Mexico, Japan, Thailand, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Hong Kong, France, Spain, The Netherlands, Italy and The Czech Republic. By monitoring and participating in local activities in visited countries, I have gained invaluable life experiences which cannot be learned in a limited classroom setting and, for that matter, in only one cultural context.
Further education in Spain is a pursuance of a course I have followed for years as a student, working professional or an independent traveler. The experiences acquired in different contexts are apt, accordingly, to inform experiences expected in Spain. The interactions with classmates (generally working professionals of rich experiences), faculty and broader community in Spain should, indeed add value to each and every one involved in what is decidedly a rich, multicultural experience. The value of education in Spain should also be invested upon returning home. If anything, experiences gained abroad are shown to enhance professional, academic and personal experiences of learners. Similarly, by pursuing graduate studies in Spain, I will not only be able to benefit personally but will enrich experiences of others in Spain and upon returning home. Finally, a decision to pursue education abroad is only consistent to current, global patterns which emphasize international education as a requirement for a more interconnected world.
