1. The real purpose of my portfolio is not only establishing the objectives for myself but also demonstrating them for others. I have decided that my actual aim in my life is to become a successful and respectful person in the society.
2. First, this portfolio is created for me in order to help me to evaluate my own knowledge and plan my further study and intentions in the life. Second, this portfolio will be helpful and useful for other students just like me since this portfolio includes not only dry academic information and plans but also a part of my personal life – my miserable story which my family and I faced to. This part of the portfolio may show me from the other side and inspire other students for future achievements.
3. There are 5 items included in my portfolio: a memoir essay, a brochure, a reflective essay, and 2 examples of the job advertisement. The memoir essay and the reflective essay are imbued with my personal life and experiences in it, where I describe my own choice, my future goals, and possible ways of their achievement. The brochure and the job advertisements are just an embodiment of my acquired skills after taking this course.
4. During developing the portfolio, I faced with such processes as a selection of content, choosing graphics, technical understanding of Carbonmade, instructor review and feedback, peer review, and reflections for each assignment. During the processes of the selection of content and the choosing graphics, I had to collect lots of material, then choose only necessary one. During the instructor review and feedback, and the peer review, I had to wait for peer-assessment and then I tried to correct my mistakes. After all, I reviewed all my assignment and wrote the reflection of all the work done during all the period.
5. Since I do believe that making a portfolio is an extremely creative and original task, so it’s hard to plan all your actions in a precise way. But I have made up a scratch for a calendar – so during the first week I have been searching for and collecting needed information and materials. Then it was just a case of inspiration and deadline. The time dedicated to different task depended on my mood, inspiration and even people who surrounded me at that time.
6. After finishing the course, I will post this portfolio on the Internet so that people, who are desperate and looking for a hand of help, will find it useful to plan their further plans and achieve their goals, as I’m trying to do. I will be their lifelike example to follow.
7. If I were an instructor, I would evaluate 2 things concerning portfolios –
the knowledge of material about a proper structure of portfolios and some creativity and desire included in these portfolios.
8. A) Personal Essay. The strength of my personal essay is the fact that it is very detailed and personalized. It shows my real passion to things I love to do and try all best to do them in my life. I also included a story of my life which explains my intentions concerning my major and future career selection. If I had, even more time, I would work on more details since I believe a detail makes the work better and understandable for the audience. I know the structure and main rules for sure. After thinking about my earlier piece of similar work, I understand my mistakes and see my progress both in general and in details. I got stuck when I had too many ideas and thoughts to write about. I was weak at describing my personal experiences as my strengths now I can do it.
B) Brochure. The strength of making a brochure is that you make it short but eye-catching and detailed so that a customer could hire exactly you. The weakness is you can omit necessary detail supposing this idea won’t work. I would work on the logo and the stories of satisfied clients since these elements attract the most. I didn’t know how to make a brochure – what information include/ omit and how to place it correctly. I see great improvement as I didn’t have any slightest idea what to do at all. I got stuck when I discovered the other brochure as they mixed my own ideas in the head. I use brainstorming and it helps to put all the ideas in order. Now I am sure I have learned how to create a proper brochure.
C) Reflective essay. The strengths and weaknesses are together in one element – you may include too many personal details. Everyone has a different worldview so that I am sure that someone can be against my thoughts and beliefs. If I had more time, I would evaluate on my narration to make it more readable and understandable for I think so. Looking at an earlier piece of similar work I shouldn’t deny I could explain my own feelings and position as I can now. Sometimes I got stuck by having too much to say, but I wrote everything down and then proof-read making it easier to understand. From reviewing this piece, I have learned how to explain mess in my head with correct words and sentences.
D) Job Advertisement #1. This type of work shows how to attract someone’s attention by using simple words or images. I would paraphrase some sentences if I had some more time. What colors to use, how to write down your wishes correctly. Thinking about the similar type of work, I understand that my skills are better as advertisements are exciting to look at and they catch people’s eyes. I got stuck when I didn’t know how to make people get interested in my advertisement. From reviewing this piece, I learned how to place information, what images and even colors to use, how to write short but powerful sentences.
E) Job Advertisement #2. Unlike the first job advertisement, the second one is more serious so requires more attention to details. It should be more detailed and precise as “we were looking for an editor”. I was thinking about changing some background images if I had some additional time. I have learned how to make both entertaining and serious kind of job advertisement and what to include there. Thinking about a previous piece of similar work, I didn’t include all obligatory and necessary details. I got stuck when I thought I demanded too much from future workers. I read some articles about the proficiency of editors and I knew what to write next. Now I am confident in my skills to organize all type of job interview.
