1. What did you find most interesting about Ai Wei Wei's art?
I strongly believe that the most interesting aspect about Ai Wei Wei’s art is the innovativeness: seeing seemingly ordinary things in different artistic perspective where a deeper meaning could be relayed to those who have the privilege to appreciate his art. As an artist, he allegedly assumed diverse roles which tapped various genres: filmmaking, installation art, marble recreations, photography, writing, music, and architecture, among others. Most of his recent works showcased his intention to communicate the need for social change to initiate freedom of expression and censorship. In the documentary film, Never Sorry, Ai Wei Wei courageously showed how art could be used as an effective medium for communicating repression. Thus, Ai Wei Wei’s art is most interesting as vehicles for social transformation.
2. How do you think Ai Wei Wei will be perceived in history?
I affirm that Ai Wei Wei will be perceived as a courageous artist who defied living in a communist regime. As such, despite the knowledge of the need to abide by political and legal restrictions, he risked freedom and alluded to detention as a means to gain international attention for social and political change. Ai Wei Wei would be perceived in history as a man of conviction who fought for his rights to be heard and to express what he thinks and believes are universally, ethically, morally, and legally right. Although he is an artist by profession, the world would regard him as a political and social activist due to his ideological perspectives. As such, he would be remembered as a world renowned artist who defied restrictions in favor of human rights.
