Ajax Mines is a project that was set up in the regional district of Thompson-Nicola. It is located in Ajax-Afton which is a site of mining and exploration. It is a mining site for the production of copper. Information available shows that it produces 109 million pounds of this resource per year. That translates to 60,000 tones per day.
This project is a consequence of the partnership between two international companies. ‘Abacus mining and Exploration Corporation’ acquired 51 percent stake in the project. However, it partnered with KGHM S.A in n2010 so as to effectively implement the project. KGHM S.A consequently became the operator of this project. In the stakeholder Salience Theory, the majority stakeholder is Abacus Corporation. However, since 49 percent of the shares are held by KGHM, they are the operators. Thus, Abacus is more of a silent partner in this project. Nevertheless, it is involved in the management of this project.
The legitimacy of this project is still in doubt though operations still go on. For instance, the environmental assessment is supposed to be done in 2015. There have also been protests by the community in relation to this project. The two companies have tried to establish a partnership with the community by providing jobs and data on the effects of the project in the environment. However, this has not yet worked to avert the complaints from the community.
Consequently, the project needs to be assessed with urgency. That would give the community in which it is operated an opportunity to understand the project better. If urgency is not employed in this case, protests are like not to stop. This will affect the productivity of the project, thus, the two companies will have a loss.
