Dear Mr. Holota:
This is with reference to the letter to Abbotsford News by Myron Neville on January 22, 2016, which detailed the menace of reckless driving. I have been a strong supporter and advocate of safe driving practices and was quite shocked to read the letter. It is clear that more steps are needed to curtail or eliminate this kind of dangerous driving practice. I do have a few ideas and suggestions for you and your readers, which we as a community can present to the local government agencies for further action. I suggest that the penalties for ‘Dangerous driving (without injury)’ as defined, be made more stringent. The word ‘accident’ should be added to ‘injury’. This will help cover near-misses as mentioned by Mr. Neville. The maximum penalty should be raised from 5 years in prison to 7 years. This will really help deter drivers, who tend to drive recklessly but do not cause any major accident or injury. Another idea is to ensure the use of cameras at streets and intersections which are currently not covered. The third suggestion is to begin an education program for people who display any kind of traffic related misdemeanor. I hope you and your readers agree that these measures will help us add more teeth to existing regulations and serve as good deterrents to drivers. I urge the intervention of your good offices and your readers’ support to ensure that the legislation is amended for the benefit of our society.
Sincerely,
