Rhetorical situation is an occurrence of rhetorical events consisting of a specified issue that is to be addressed to specific audience under some constraints (Cunningham et al. 184). Therefore, the rhetorical situations constitute of exigencies prevalent in the world, which through persuasion can be positively modified. The audience is another constituent, as the persuasion of the problem has to be addressed to a set of affected individuals. In this case, the decisions and actions of the audience act as the mediator towards modifying the problem. Lastly, there are the limiting factors towards the relevant decisions and actions, which are said to be the constraints, where the constraints comprise of events, relations, persons and objects (Cunningham et al. 189). Other than that, the speaker also through the use of ethos, logos and pathos brings about certain limitations. In the case of the Popes speech, the three elements of the Rhetorical situation were met. This is because, there was the Pope was addressing the immigrant families and children on the issue of maintaining their dream and ensuring equal opportunities to others through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos. The paper provides a description of the appeals used by the Pope in addressing the issue on the acquisition of equal opportunities.
Pope’s Appeals
The Pope’s claim was that equal opportunities are supposed to be provided to everyone as it brings happiness among people who support them in meeting their dreams. To support his claim, the Pope used logos, ethos, and pathos to persuade the children and their parents. Looking at the logos, the Pope utilized the example of Martin Luther King and Cardinal Dolan. Here, the Pope said that Martin Luther King also always desired that every person attained equal opportunities. The example, of providing education to all the children was used to indicate how most people would be a position to attain self-sufficiency. On the other hand, Cardinal Dolan dream was that everyone was living happily. Therefore, the Pope aimed at showing the children how well most people including the parents wished the best for them.
Additionally, the Pope also supported his claim through his character that was vivid in the entire speech. Through the use of ethos, the Pope showed how crucial friendship, goodness, and understanding were to the development of the society. Through most of his statements, the Pope showed to have a clean heart and to wish the best for both the parents and the children. For instance, he said that ‘Today our aim to keep dreaming through appreciating the opportunities provided to all of us.'
Lastly, the Pope used the emotions of the audience to deliver his claim, by using pathos. Here, he used the difficult times the parents and the children have to go through in realizing their dreams. He stated that it was not always easy to maintain a smile following the difficult moments resulting from family issues or even sicknesses. In the same, he said that despite the problems, people should be good in supporting each other meet their dreams.
Conclusion
In conclusion, to be in a position to realize their dreams and being good in providing equal opportunities to other individuals, everyone should be kind enough to promote happiness among the people as it is crucial in the realization of dreams. It is the joy and the goodness provided by the people we relate with that support people in realizing their dream. Sadness should never be tolerated as it deprives the inner self the desire to keep dreaming.
