Lenovo is currently the second manufacturer of PC’s globally but has yet to make a mark on its overall brand awareness and despite main competitor Apple has been on the list for a long time, currently holding number 1 ranking, Lenovo did not even make the top 100. Today, smartphones market is the main competition field between the two companies. In that direction, Lenovo announced that it was buying Motorola, the well-known mobile phone brand from Google for a price around $ 2.9 billion as businessweek.com reports. For both companies the target market consists of a) teenagers, with social media and internet use as well as music b) college and university students and c) business people, but while it is the fluent market of USA and Europe that Apple targets, Lenovo thrives in developing economies with the low budget, sub-$100 it offers. Lenovo tied in the 4th place with LG, as its results improved on steady gains at home and abroad with the share of non-China shipments rising steadily to hit 20% in the third quarter of 2014, up from 9% a year ago. So basically, while aiming at more or less the same target group, the fact remains that college and university students in India and China, have a huge difference in income terms than their peers in the US and Canada making Lenovo’s smartphones a much more preferred choice in the first case. And while emerging rapidly, Lenovo has yet a long way to go, since its revenues are currently around one sixth from Apple’s revenues.
