Introduction
While I was working for Pepsi Company, I experienced the Critical incident process of performance appraisal. The management of Pepsi Company took consideration of critical factors affecting us as the employees of the organization. The critical behaviors of the employees are monitored and recorded by employees. The supervisors of Pepsi record such incidents as they occur in order to make the analysis easy. I also experienced performance interviews in Pepsi Organization as the managers tried to determine our performance levels in various departments of operations and production. This appraisal tool also involved the identification of various problems in performance in order to tackle them as soon as possible as well as ensuring smooth operations in the organization. The positive and negative performance of the employees are written down by the manager in order to facilitate the appraisal process in Pepsi Company.
Pros
- Critical incident method of appraisal is advantageous in the sense that the evaluations are carried out based on the tangible job behaviors. The ratings in this appraisal too are supported fully by detailed descriptions, therefore, the facilitating provision of feedback with ease.
- The chances of biases are reduced greatly with the use of this process of performance appraisal in an organization.
Cons
- .This process is disadvantageous in that emphasis is often placed on the negative instances while forgetting the positive incidents during performance evaluation by managers in an organization.
- This process is also associated with very high levels of supervision making it difficult for employees to operate in a free environment.
This Critical incident process used in Pepsi Company should be improved by putting much attention and focus on both the negative and positive incidents during performance evaluation. The issues relating to excessive supervision should be eliminated in order to improve this process of evaluation. This process should also be improved ensuring that feedback can be given through this process.
