Poverty has been on the rise in some parts of the world, a situation that prompts the American government to get concerned. America as the super power takes the central duty in regulating the poverty in the affected countries. Through doing that, it benefits from various projects around those countries. Their main drive in formulating a policy on global poverty is to improve the welfare of those countries and achieve better economic outcomes. This is mainly in those countries with the citizens living below 1 dollar per day.
United States foreign policy deals with diplomacy, defense, and development. The “three D’s” are what the United States establishes while working with other countries around the globe. All of the three factors contribute a number of strengths as well as weaknesses; therefore, the focus must be on one of the factors in American foreign policy. Thus to deal with poverty around the world, that factor or approach should be development. This can be achieved through improvement of standards of living in the other country. Americans would not only cater for the lives of others in those countries, but their own lives are improved as well. It is through these actions that work to improve development within foreign nations, United States increases its national security, improves its economy, enhances the environmental factors, as well as establishes an ethical responsibility where it works to overcome poverty completely.
Through eradicating global poverty, the United States improves the national security around its vicinity. On the case of national security strategy, the documents that are used by both the Obama and Bush administrations, the biggest threats that would face United States over the next few decades come “from less conquering states as compared to those failing.” This implies that it would be those states that do not have the financial capital to create sovereign governments or make up an efficient economy that pose the major security threats to the United States. In many cases, insurgents take advantage of the weak governments in the third world countries to create their cells and set up base. This leads to a state of lawlessness that enables terrorists to work with ease. Since most of these insurgents have an axe to grind with the U.S., its only logical that the U.S. government assists those nations so that their national security would not be breached.
It would also be through these fragile countries where corruption as well as extremism could take the control due to the problem of effective and facilitative governance. If these aspects are left unchecked, then, these states or countries would develop into a problem or threat for other nations surrounding it. Therefore, it would be by developing or improving the failed states into stable nations that could be effectively and sufficiently rule over their population as well as assist in foster construction of more ideal and functional economies that the United States lowers the possibility of having to work with some conflicts that might emerge from the failed state’s internal problem. Therefore, United States foreign policy should focus on the improvement of those nations that would boost their national security, end conflicts and improve inter relation between those countries.
In addition to enhancing national security in the United States, the priority of ending global poverty increases the American economy in a number of ways. This would be another advantage of having to have a foreign policy fighting for the poverty in United States. The government of United States has put aside $500 billion in an economy made to invest in developing countries. This means that the United States government sets some amount in the improvement and boosting the general economy of the countries affected by the poverty. In some sense it could be understood that in working towards increasing or improving economic output in the developing nations, this opens doors for higher and greater returns on the investments whilst increasing the standards of living for the citizens who lives in those developing nations.
For instance, if the target lies on increasing the wages for those people living in those nations, the n it would be expected that more people can then be able to afford or buy expensive American goods thus improving the economy . The policy of ending global poverty, therefore, would not only improve the lives of the people living in the developing countries, but it also enhances the lives of Americans.
Investors in the U.S. as well as multinational companies in the U.S. are always on the lookout for investment opportunities that promise higher returns. Among the areas where the full economic potential has not been fully exploited are the poorest countries of the world. By stepping in to assist citizens of the developing nations, the U.S. government catalyzes better living standards, which in turn means improved purchasing power among the citizens. The rapport established between those countries the U.S. government is assisting means that U.S. investors and U.S. companies have an upper hand when it comes to exploiting the business opportunities that arise in those countries. Therefore, economically, it would be in the interest of the Americans for the government to assist the developing nations.
Moreover, another crucial advantage of putting to an end global poverty would be decreasing the toll that people put on the environment. This would be due to the fact that in many impoverished places, access to sufficient and green technologies could not economically be feasible. Therefore, by ending this global poverty it would allow improved and sufficient access to those ecologically-allowed technologies. Again, by improving the standards of living, the people living in the developing countries would be able to use and access cleaner technologies thus fulfilling their energy needs drastically. The cleaner technologies could assist in reducing carbon emissions that could emerge from developing nations that enhances the lives and everyone worldwide. The policy can achieve this through introducing those elements used by United States in improving their technology. This could be introduction of the recent environmental methods like greenhouse system.
On the other hand, poverty reduction should be a thing that should be undertaken by the developed countries. From the discussion above, most of the benefits are directed towards the United States, as compared to the developing countries that need the assistance. The policy also is not clear since there should be certain agreement on the benefit of the other party. These policies have been in the revolution since the time Bush was in power. In his action which supervised the enhancement of the developing countries especially from Africa. These campaigns were meant to improve the plight of poverty in those areas. However, the process had a lot of short comes due to financing of the process. The idea got its support from the Obama regime although it has the same problems.
Finally, reducing global poverty can be said as an ethical move that the government of United States is capable to accomplish. United Nations have explained that extreme poverty could be absolutely eliminated by 2030. This leaves United States, as the biggest economic power around the world, thus it could assist contribute to this problem through aiding in the development procedure that should take place. Through continuing to offer funds to the developing nations, and therefore by assisting in economic growth within those areas, where United States could assist in making poverty history.
The policies are met with many challenges which need to be clearly addressed. They all managed doing that through construction of new strategies which have been met different places. However, according my opinion the American foreign policy on global poverty eradication has improved the living standard of millions and millions of people in the developing countries. United States has as well created a good relation with the countries that were involved.
In conclusion, the goal of dealing with global poverty could be the fundamental focus of American foreign policy. This should be done through working to put to an end global poverty enhances American national security through creation of stability within the foreign nations. It would also improve the American economy through boosting the purchasing power of those people in foreign countries, giving them with the ability to buy American goods. Moreover, enhanced purchasing power gives people within the developing foreign countries the improved access to better technologies that would assist in reducing the global effects of humans over the environmental issues. And lastly, while working towards the end on global poverty could be an ethical action since the United States posses the power to perform its duties as the super power. Therefore, improving the living standards in the foreign countries would not only assist Americans, but the whole policy would benefit the entire globe. By working to eliminate global hunger, United States can help in making poverty a thing of the past in the developing countries while benefiting from the actions.
