The documentary taps on one of today’s most controversial issues in society which is homosexuality. The striking feel about the movie is that it taps two sides of the sensationalize issue such as the point of views of conservative Christians and also the question, is homosexuality a choice. The most striking aspect about the film is that as early as the beginning, it points out that homosexuality is not something forced on anyone rather a life choice. The film actually presented an animated criticism of several theories mentioned by clinicians (or theorist) belief that sexual orientation changes over time. My initial take on the film is that it will go deep into the controversial social issue and relate it to religion (as pointed out by its title). Again, the film presented the difficulty experienced by people who are attracted to the same-sex due to the conservative eyes of members of society. Relating the sensitive issue to religion, some mainstream arguments pertaining to whether being gay is actually morally wrong or not, people most often or not use the Bible as their main argument. There are many people mentioning that the attraction to the same-sex is a sin because it takes away the function of pro-creation. The attempt to change the thinking of people is synonymous to the kind of struggle people in the experienced in terms of spreading God’s word because some people just refuse to listen (Cory & Michael p. 63).
The families interviewed and featured in the film, shows how difficult for some traditional parents to accept the lifestyle of their child most especially if they are attracted to the same-sex. It is a powerful message that the film portrayed especially when it showed how the families journeyed from distress, acceptance, reconciliation and unconditional love. The unconditional love came from when the parents accepted that their children were different who the rest of their cliques because they were not attracted to the opposite sex. Throughout, history people would mention criticism of being attracted to same-sex because most argue that it beats the purpose of life. People would often mention that God will punish those who chose to love the same-sex and as a result homosexuality turned into a taboo in several conservative cultures.
I feel that the belief that homosexuality is wrong and morally unacceptable is an old cliché that features the gap in the thinking of people. In my opinion, there is nothing written in the Bible linking same-sex relationship as a sin against God because God always advocated unconditional love. The real reason behind some people believing that homosexuality is wrong rooted from the biases and prejudices of people who refuse to accept that some people are not different. In psychology, for example, Homosexuality was even labelled as a mental disorder. Because of the promulgation of negative implications of being a homosexual, many people were influence by the notion that it is indeed wrong. I honestly think that there is nothing written in the Bible. The main problem, however, is that it is not easy to change the minds of people especially since the belief was planted deep into the core of society. Cultural change is not easy because it would require the cooperation of everyone and all aspects of society including religion. As observed, there are still several conservative religious practitioners who are set on the belief that being a homosexual is wrong. Unfortunately, due to the influence of religion, the followers are easily persuaded by the belief. The negative connotation about homosexuality as cycled in society that it encapsulated the evolution of the belief related to the issue.
