In the question of “brain vs. brawn,” for most people the answer is pretty straightforward: education is the foundation of a quality life. While this is an irrefutable fact, most people still fail to comprehend the effort that this “brawn” side requires in the attaining of this position. One’s sports abilities are not considered as important as one’s educational background, while in fact the swift reactions, fast running or quick thinking with the ball still falls under the category of individual abilities, not pertaining to all people. Students who possess these abilities are advised to take full advantage of these gifts, to spend numerous hours practicing, just like math or algebra students spend hours deciphering equations, and finally, the body of a sportsman is destined to be a healthier temple to the mind, unlike it is the case with most science students, who due to hours spent in laboratories, utterly neglect the physical aspect of their existence.
Every single human being is a different existential organism, whose abilities and success rate of doing a task vary from those pertaining to other people. Thus, humans are all individuals who possess better or worse cognitive abilities, artistic expression or athletic talent. There are even those unfortunate ones who go through a mediocre life, never knowing what it means to truly be great at something. And whatever this something is, it is the person’s duty to develop this endowment to the furthest point possible. Not all students can be highly intelligent, just like not all students can be good at sports. Thus, whichever gift a student possesses, it is unfair for him to be forced to give up what he is best at due to bad grades in subjects he requires more time to comprehend.
Additionally, athletes tend to spend a lot of time practicing, staying in shape and developing their physical skills, like running, jogging, swimming, handling the ball with either one’s hands or feet. The time an athlete spends practicing possesses the same quality as the time a science student spends studying and working on different tasks. A serious career in sports demands character and numerous waives that students who pursue careers in sciences may not be forced to do. This could mean that sometimes, athletes do not have enough time to pursue a higher grade in certain subjects, but only a passing one. Even in the case of athletes being denied the possibility of participating in athletic programs due to bad grades, this still does not mean that their grades would certainly improve.
Finally, even the old philosophers comprehend the importance of the body, the physical side of existence. The mind cannot function in a neglected temple, a body that is ridden with apathy and lack of physical exercise. This is something most students who pursue a career in the sciences neglect. Constant bending over the book cannot possibly do any good to the spine or the rest of the body. The body needs to move, run, swim, jump, and keep itself as healthy as possible, because no mind can function properly in a decaying body, and this is the image the athletes should portray: a healthy mind, even though it may not be that of a genius, in a healthy body.
The athletes’ physical abilities should not be undermined over talent in other areas, nor should their time spent exercising, because the more functional the body, the more functional the brain and by letting athletes participate in athletic programs regardless of their grades, the university is allowing them not only to explore their full potential, but also provide the further possibility of the development of their mind in a healthy temple.
