What kind of production system do you think ‘Apple’ may have?
Apple Inc. is the world’s second largest IT Company in terms of revenue. The company employs the best technology and state of the art production processes to serve its customers high quality products. In my opinion, the production method used at Apple is the continuous production system. Following are the various features of a continuous production system; the production is entirely based on demand and same is the case for Apple. Products at Apple are produced essentially to meet customer demand; moreover, the production process follows a standard procedure and flow of production. The process is continuous rather than intermittent. The products on the assembly line are standardized as are the iPods and iMacs. In addition, careful consideration is given to quality standards therefore; Apple has an effective and efficient quality management department.
Apple is a proponent of continuous development and this is reflected in their products and design philosophy. The company continuously strives to bring about change in their production systems to make them more efficient and cost effective and also deliver on their promises of providing exceptional quality and innovative products. Apple has now come up with a new method of producing its iMacs which is laser manufacturing process. This new technology can said to be a great leap towards technological innovation. Previously, Apple had designed a robotic arm for the production of iPods. The main aim of introducing new and better production technologies is to remain competitive in the market and most importantly, ensure that the product meets its specifications in terms of functionality, aesthetic appearance and reliability. (“Patently Apple”). The newer technologies enable mass production which is a key element of continuous production processes. They also assist in improved and accurate assembly and design of the products.
