Camp lejeume has been well known after the infamous pollution scandal that took place in the area and over seven hundred and fifty thousand drank and also took bath in water that contained high level of poisonous chemicals. These harmful chemicals were put in water at station Jackville, a town in North Carolina. This incident became very scandalous because it is regarded as one of the most serious water pollution incident in USA at large.
The main chemicals that leaked from underground tanks for storage included spills from industrial areas; sites for waste disposal as well as out of base dry cleaning business areas were reported as the core origin of pollution. Samples of the spillage were taken to the lab and after undergoing tests samples of the following chemicals were found in the samples; vinyl chloride, benzene and (TCE) trichloroethene.
- Benzene
Benzene is a colorless liquid at room temperature but it is highly effervescent. It catches fire solubility is low because it is an in organic substance. Both human activities as well as natural activities lead to its formation.
Higher levels of benzene kills. Benzene also causes a feeling of dizziness, tremors, drowsiness, increased heartbeat, unconsciousness and confusion. Long term exposure interferes with bone marrow and blood cells making victims anemic.
- Trichloroethene (TCE)
Trichloroethene (TCE) is classified by environmental protection agency as being harmful to human health in all ways it is exposed to them. It interferes with the normal working of the central nervous system, the liver, kidney, testicles of males, developing fetus in females an lowers immune system.
- vinyl chloride
Vinyl chloride is also poisonous and leads to development of blood cancer, lymphoma an scleroderma in humans.
