In Consequentialism, it defines an act as wrong or right depending on the action results and the more good results it produce the better the action is. In class, we did volunteering work with different people with disability. During the immersion I was able to help a person with disability in the carpentry workshop department, we and the person I helped interacted through sharing stories and telling each other about ourselves.
He told me that his disability was never a hindrance to him because he manages to perform chores like a normal person. I think my actions were good because I saw that he was enjoying my company even if it was for a short time. I was able to give him a sense of pride and added self-confidence because even if he was disabled he managed to build wonderful crafts and even I can not do myself.
Many people will say that giving added attention to people with disability only makes them pity themselves more, because they are reminded that there is something lacking from them. But I don’t think that is the case for people who chose to help and interact with these people. Interacting with them show them there are people who are willing to listen to their stories and not look at them as hopeless cases because they can still do many thing with the body that they have. For my part helping them gave me a sense of fulfillment that I am thankful that I am a full-functioning individual and that their stories will inspire me to be a better individual and a better professional.
