The article is about the application of social psychology to motivate and lobby for social and political participation in anti-poverty campaigns and measures. The application of social psychology is from a social identity approach that entails group efficacy, group emotion as well as meaningful social identity. All these factors are important in advocating and promoting a collective effort towards the eradication of poverty in the developing nations and the achievement of any set millennium development goals (MDGs).
The social identity approach highlights the significance psychological reality that lies with social groups and their collective behavior. Group-based emotion drives collective action against poverty, people take action when they perceive and feel effects of poverty. Group efficacy people believe that collective action towards set goals is effective, and this can fight poverty.
Saving Bulgaria’s Jews: An analysis of social identity and the mobilization of social solidarity
The article evaluates the strategies used to mobilize and control the Bulgarians to resist the deportation of the Jews; the procedures apply widely in anti-poverty campaigns. The methods used include Jews are in-group rather than an out-group, help of in-group individuals is a vital aspect of in-group identity, and that the in-group will experience destruction if the Jews fall victims. For psychological, social status the term ‘We Bulgarians’ was used to driving the people against Jewish persecution. Viewing the poverty stricken countries and people as members of the same community can influence collective action from people, with such a view they will understand that such people deserve and need their help. More inclusive categorization of people develops and widens the scope of helping behavior.
