The article ‘At the crossroads of two empires’ analyzes the discrimination that the minority races in the United States face. The minority communities in the United States include the Indians and black Americans. The article describes the racism demonstrated in the movie that was directed by Mira, a young Indian woman. Mira has made a great success in history having directed a movie that has won a national award despite being a woman from a minority group. The article evaluates how racism has caused different minority groups to fight with one another. The movie by Mira explains how the Indians in the united tastes found themselves there and the challenges they face in the states.
Racism first made the Indians move to Africa when there was construction of the railways. The movement was facilitated by the Europeans who colonized the region. After Uganda got independence, the Indians continued to carry out businesses in countries such as Uganda. Idi Amin who was a dictator ordered the Indian race out of the country. The reason for this can be associated with racism. The Indians can also be blamed of racism in this case since they went in these countries with the belief that the black race is a minor part of the society. Racism by the Indians can also be seen when Mina falls in love with a black man but her parents refuse marriage with the black man. This shows that the stereotype about blacks still exists.
In the United States, racial discrimination is very common according to the movie. Mina finds it difficult to carry out business in the country. This is due to the view by the whites that the Indians are minority group whom they cannot trade with. Mira also refuses to be married by Demetrious, a white, first because of the racism she has witnessed in the region. Her parents are aware of the problems they face due to discrimination by the whites hence fear that their daughter will also be mistreated. The whites are capitalists who do not care about the others. They mistreat minority groups and this is why Mira refuses to be married by the white.
In conclusion, it can be said that different races have stereotypes about other races and this is what cases discrimination according to color. Racism is a common problem in many countries and especially in the United States.
