Azar Nafisi is a unique, individualistic writer who believes in the age-long concept of imagination. According to her, imagination is a vital component of storytelling, and every story must have a character that makes the audience remember it for its uniqueness, and that uniqueness is only provided through imagination. She believes that imagination is what makes the novel and storytelling a very pertinent and unique genre. Even poetry should not be devoid of imagination and writers need to incorporate more of it in their writing.
She mentions three main books that inspired her to her own writing The Republic of Imagination, which include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Babbitt and The heart is a lonely hunter. These books consist of characters that are truly imaginary and are run by a string of creative ideas. These ideas take the reader to a different world that is governed by imagination only, and everything is free to be judged as it is. Imagination provides a portal to freedom, to think and perceive and counter things as they are. If imagination is lost or constricted in writing, she believes that people would most likely move away from reading, and that is evident of what is happening in many countries where people are quitting reading because the books and their content are dry and not likely to be considered interesting by many readers.
This makes reading itself a tedious activity which is taken as the last route to end boredom in the face of television and music. Imagination is put into the books to enhance the reader’s mind and develop thoughts and ideas therefore if imagination is stymied and taken out; it makes the readers dry and dull and lose their sense of creativity. These reasons accost for the importance of imagination in writing.
