The major principles regarding using punishment instruments are utmost care, stringency and ability to encourage or motivate a student to work. The successful plan of using methods that help with maintaining disciplined behavior should include only the most effective forms of punishment simultaneously. According to that, the first step for Ms. Smiley is carefully observing and exploring personalities each of her students. For instance, student A can be vulnerable and student B is not present in the classroom. Therefore, it is significant to understand how the teacher can deal with them appropriately. The next step is a strict indication of student’s behavior problems, according to which the teacher can implement required punishment principles. At the same time, adopting a certain form of punishment should be based on an individual approach to children with different personalities. In addition, it can be more effective to move slowly from using interventions with positive reinforcement such as restitution or overcorrection to more negative instruments namely in-house suspension or response cost. Dramatic using of verbal reprimands and time-out can lead to harmful consequences, especially for fourth-grade students that are active and vigorous due to the special period of their childhood. Thus, receiving approval from parents for using certain punishment methods is a significant part of implementing an improving plan. Undoubtedly, all of the punishment forms have their pros and cons. However, verbal reprimands, restitution and time-out can bring great effect in improving students’ behavior when using carefully, with a focus on positive side and under control.
Since Luke is a problem child with specific needs, his personality is obviously vulnerable, unstable and rather dangerous for both himself and his classmates if it is not under control. In order to avoid adverse consequences of Luke’s behavior, an effective improving plan created accordingly with ABA (applied behavior analysis) should involve the following components. First, it concerns persistent observing of Luke’s behavior, attitude, communication skills, connection with relatives, food, books, music and movies preferences, and other ultimately significant daily habits. Every slight detail of his hidden behavior can bring a necessary comprehension and an important information of how to help Luke to overcome irritability and restlessness. In the next stage, teachers, counselor and all the responsible surrounding should analyze the information and conclude about possible ways of creating an appropriate environment for Luke. Demonstration of fully understanding and accepting his behavior can bring Luke to a sense of internal security and treatment, which is highly important for his morale. After this, teachers should acquaint Luke with other possible ways of behaving so that he will know about self-management and scheduling. The role model or the person Luke can emulate will bring understanding the distinctions between destructive and constructive behavior. In other words, maintaining pacific, comfortable and supporting environment is the ultimate aim for Luke’s teachers.
