The book ‘Effective Immediately: How to Fit in, Stand out, and Move up at your First Real Job’ is for young graduates who are entering the real jobs and provides useful tips and advices which can help them carve their niche in their jobs. It is important for the students to learn the technique to ‘stand out’ from their colleagues to get recognized. This book is full of such advices, though many of the suggestions are based on common sense; still they prove to be useful as remembering the best advice is always good. The advices shared in the book should be adopted according to one’s working environment. This paper would be discussing the advices I like best from the book along with my description of possible utilization of these advices.
Based on my work experience, the advice which I have decided to turn into practical approach is to reach office before time. Reaching the workplace before time definitely makes a difference as one settles in the workplace and is prepared for the day before others arrive. In real-time work settings, usually early morning meetings are scheduled and reaching office early provides time to prepare for the meeting. Reaching office early also enables the individual to commence work on time and the individual is considered sincere towards work. As stated in the book, this effort is definitely noted by the superiors and increases the credibility of the individual.
Other advice, stated in book which I always follow is to dress in formal clothes to work. It yields several benefits; formal clothes give the appearance of seriousness and sincerity and any unscheduled meeting can be attended at short notice. This increases the creditability and leads to exposure to business dimensions as the new recruits are often provided opportunities to be exposed to business meetings for their professional benefit. The sincere dress induces the feeling of sincerity. It is always good to demonstrate the sincere attitude at workplace.
Third advice which appealed to me most is the advice to build network and know people at workplace. Knowing people and their work responsibilities at job assists in getting the job done faster as one would not have to waste time in asking around for the concerned person for the job and second, networking with colleagues enables one to get all the assistance required. On the basis of personal experience, I can state that networking has its benefits in terms of getting the work done faster and acquiring knowledge about any concerned area.
Creating to-learn list is definitely a good advice and novel also. During feedback sessions, it is common for the superiors to ask for the area in which the individual requires improvement or training which has been identified. Moreover, to acquire the knowledge or the skills which are used at workplace frequently also gets identified with the help of this list. The self-identification of training needs always provides an initiative to the person to acquire the required skills.
Another advice which appealed to me was scheduling an hour during the day, away from attention-diverters to complete the work with full attention. This advice is significant as it would help in completing the important work and finishing it without error. This would lead to enhanced efficiency in work.
“Do things you fear first”, this advice is also worthy of practice as one tends to postpone the work which one doesn’t like. This however, builds tension and as per the advice, it’s better to finish the work which an individual fears. This would yield two benefits; one, the work would be finished before time thus giving one the time for discussion with superior and one would be able to concentrate on other projects in better manner after completing the project which was feared.
The advice of carrying a pen and paper at workplace to capture all the information shared in early days of joining the job is also a good approach as one can always refer back to the notes to use the information shared earlier. This would enable the individual to perform his job without disturbing his mentor or colleagues for the information.
Using the books and knowledge which are used by one’s colleagues to increase the knowledge is good suggestion as this would keep individual at the same level of knowledge. This would enable the individual to have effective discussion on work with colleagues as the individual would also possess equal knowledge.
Apart from the advices discussed above, the advices which appealed to me are gathering knowledge about the work department and roles and responsibilities of colleagues and to steer clear of colleagues with negative attitude. Knowing the role of every individual in department would enable the individual to have understanding of his role and significance of his job responsibility. This would also give the overall understanding of the functioning of department to the individual. Colleagues with negative attitude may dampen the spirit of the young graduates and hence, it has been advised to steer clear of the colleagues with negative attitude.
