The Brothers by Stephen Kinzer is a book that deals with the personal perspectives and beliefs of the Dulles brothers and those whom they have interacted together. Through the story of the Dulles brothers, Kinzer provides the readers with the nature of U.S foreign policy. The nature of the U.S policy is shaped and demonstrated by the brothers, other dealers and wheelers the president has interacted with for more than fifty years (Kinzer 18). It shows that the U.S president during that time was blind and open to the violence, and this provides the reason for the increased terrorism in the U.S. Furthermore, the story also shows the world’s realities, the qualities that define the U.S and the country of U.S. The Dulles brothers represent those who hail from the American soil.
The narration of the story of the brothers is important because it clearly presents the relationship of the corporations, the employment with the strong law organizations and the power that was gained by the United States. The Dulles brothers are depicted as powerful people in the United States, aftermath of World War II. The author also presents different nature of these characters and the similarities that people have in the society. He says that people have the ability to have deep thoughts and thus solve the problems that present themselves in the society.
Allen and Foster came from the American setting when John Watson Foster there grandfather worked as the secretary of the state. They were professional lawyers and both were working in the Sullivan & Cromwell organization that was recognized internationally. The officers in this company were directly linked to big business within and outside the United States, and this made the firm grow immensely. Between 1953 and 1959 John Foster served as the secretary of the United States while his brother Allen served in the criminal investigation authority between 1953 and 1961 (Kinzer 37). However, their influenced in the government was significant even before they were appointed to serve in these positions.
The book the brothers by Kinzer is an important book since it has implication on the U.S foreign politics and the economy. The events that took place during the cold war as depicted by the author are recognized as an international system of events with the bipolar world. Indeed, some of the actions by the U.S presidents during the cold world war had huge impacts on the American and world history. For example, President Dwight Eisenshower accepted the recommendation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to employ the tactical nuclear weapons against China, and this had devastating effects since it led to the killings of many people. The story shaped the perspective of U.S on the foreign policy (Kinzer 102). Many elites were coming up with diverse views concerning the foreign policy and its importance in shaping the American history. They said that people should not have huge criticisms of the foreign policy but should instead embrace it since the foreign policy has huge positive impacts on the politics, economy, and the world history. The elites were used during the cold war to come up with policies which could improve the relationship between the U.S and other foreign countries. Furthermore, through the book, the readers can understand that the U.S is a democratic state that elects its presidents, and thus the president should adopt policies that respect the rights of all the human beings. The story of the two brothers liberates the minds of the political leaders, religious clerics and the citizens to think widely while addressing the societal problems and challenges. Thus, the arguments presented by Kinzer are significant in shaping the political and historical developments of different countries.
