Romantic symphonies use a broader sweep of emotion and attempt to carry themselves based upon feeling rather than structure this is evident at around 17:13 in Brahms Symphony No 3 as the tone of the music rises and falls. It comes to a complete halt at 18:40 then it shifts at 19:03 to softer slower sound. Then rises again to stronger heaver tones at 21:21increasing 2312 when it again slows 23:24 24:25 when all that can be heard are a few single notes leaving the tonality sounding ambiguous by reducing it tonally inconclusive by omitting the orchestral harmonies to a few notes.
In producing this work he often uses somber keys. He switches to a much brighter arpeggio that opens at around 30:17. Some of his modulations use enharmonic and chromatic chords others use modes and of modal chords. Brahms, at around 34:36 and again 37:58 produces another set of changes reducing the sound to a few note rising and falling to another crescendo at 38:49. These incomplete chords result in colorful harmony and subtle harmonic effects and changes.
Braham’s work serves as a bridge between the classic and romantic styles. Mahler’s work moves even further away from the classic into the romantic style by searching for greater expression. For this, Mahler turns to rhythmic patterns, and dynamics along with harmonization. Symphony No. 3 evokes feelings of the natural world. It starts slowly and seems to have the weight of the mountains behind it.
At around Mahler’s Symphony 5:37 softens to a few muffled percussion and wind instruments and slowly builds upon that. The increase in volume and tempo becomes noticeable at about 18:17 where it sounds like birdcalls are part of the music. By 1:18:56, the full orchestra is involved in producing what still is highly reflective of natural sounds. At around 1:38:52 Mahler incorporates a series of percussion rhythms alternating with softer more airy notes to end this symphony. Brahms uses the full orchestra for a more classical sounding finish. He builds to a arpeggio at around 48:41 that flows downward in intensity at 49:42, moves upward again at 51:23, cresting and falling until it ends with a few strong precise chords played in unison at 53:23 for what feels like a classic finish.
