I have chosen the concept of metaphor for analysis.
Metaphor – is a figure of speech, a word or an expression used in a figurative sense, which is based on an unmentioned comparison of object with another on the basis of their common trait. It is a figure of speech consisting of the use of words and expressions in a figurative sense, based on some analogy, similarity, comparison.
An example of metaphor from everyday use may be the following: Your voice is music to my ears, and you are my sunshine in the sea of blackness. (In other words, it would be: your voice so much pleasant for me, and you are my everything).
For describing an appropriate circumstance for using the metaphor I will provide its following example: “Anne is a princess”. From this phrase we get to know that Diane is spoilt, can afford much (even beyond reasonable limits), being treated in a non-judgmental manner, and so on. This is a vivid example of a metaphor which meaning we can derive from general knowledge of royal manners. This phrase can be applied to anybody who answers the aforementioned description. However if we use the same phrase to the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, the collocation loses its metaphorical meaning and acquires its common sense, as The Princess Anne is the only daughter of current UK monarch.
“People are too dependent on computers” – this is the topic I have chosen for further generating ideas regarding this statement. The reason why I have chosen it was just because this statement also applies to me making me a part of this phenomenon. Basically, my own interest on effect of this dependence on me made me choose the topic aforementioned.
People always try finding easy ways out of difficult situations. Computers help them greatly in that.
Computers allow people produce more and faster. The more people want – the more dependent they get.
Computers allow access to uncountable sources of information without need leaving the working place.
Computers automate working process. The more it is automated, the better are the results.
Computers allow people to organize their lives, studying, and working process.
We are the people of the XXI century, times have changed. We no longer live in the era of paper information, but in the era of a digital one. Without computers people wouldn`t be a part of society.
Computers educate, train, enlighten.
etc.
Starbursting
What is bad in that? What is good?
How did it happen so?
What circumstances lead to increase/decrease of this dependence?
How do different strata of society react on this phenomenon?
What can be done to decrease bad influence of this phenomenon?
Why is it necessary to use computers nowadays?
Can such a dependence be justified taking into account needs of modern individual?
etc.
Five Ws technique
Who experiences such a dependence?
What causes this dependence?
When did the development of such a dependence started?
Where can we observe this dependence?
Why does it happen so?
I believe, that “brainstorming” was the most productive one among all three because it didn`t keep me within bounds trying to understand this occurrence. I was free to mull over any side of this problem and was free to provide any assumptions, even if they are incorrect, whereas “Five Ws” technique narrowed me to 5 questions only. “Starbursting” was good as well allowing me to enlarge the scale of my research, however this method required me to ask questions and then answering them, making extra work, when statements acquired during “brainstorming” allowed me to start working with the statements immediately.
Definitely, I will do my best to use all of the techniques for my future writing projects as I`m striving to make my every project as much complex and as much accurate as possible. I believe application of all three techniques will allow me to achieve this result. However, in my book, “brainstorming” will be used most, due to the reasons stated afore.
