Summary
The project is about educating the community about Healthy People 2020. Community education on heart disease and stroke is the title of the project. A number of individuals have to be present so that the project is implemented successfully. These individuals are my preceptor, the ICU educator for my hospital, and the Heart Disease and Stroke outcomes Manager at my employment. The dates of implantation of the project are 28th and 29th of July. The target is the adults mainly from the age 20 and more. The specific Healthy People 2020 topic is heart disease and stroke. The aim of addressing heart disease and stroke is to improve cardiovascular health and achieve a healthy people. This will help to curb the rising cases or cardiovascular related problems (Lloyd-Jones, Hong, Mozaffarian, Van Horn & Arnett, 2010). Most people are living with cardiovascular disease with heart disease and stroke causing the most number of deaths (Mensah, 2007). Some of the disease factors such as high blood pressure are controllable and need to be addressed. The aim of addressing this topic is to achieve a number of objectives. Addressing this topic aims to reduce the number of coronary heart disease deaths and stroke deaths. It also aims to increase the number of individuals who are aware of their blood pressure levels so that they may take the necessary actions to put them under control. Also, it increases the number of individuals who are aware of the symptoms of heart attack and stroke and how they can go about them during a heart attack or stroke. It also aims to reduce the number of patients who are diagnosed and hospitalized due to heart failure. With all this done, healthy people will be achieved and the overall number of deaths due to heart diseases and stroke reduced (Maurer & Smith, 2013)).
The community will be impacted by this project in a number of ways. The number of deaths due to heart disease and stroke in the community will reduce. This is because members of the community will now be in a better position to handle such individuals rather that watch them suffer because of the lack of knowledge to handle the situation. The patients suffering from heart disease will themselves be in a better position to handle themselves. They will know the right measures to take to manage their conditions. The community as a whole will have the basic knowledge of heart disease and stroke. They will also learn the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle to prevent development of these diseases. This will decrease the overall number of heart diseases and stroke in the community. A healthy community will be achieved. Healthy person means a more productive people that will lead to the general development of the nation.
The following behavioral objectives will provide guidance throughout the project.
The total number of persons trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be higher as compared to the previous years by the end of the project. The number should increase by more than 60% of the current number so as to improve the provision of health services (Lloyd-Jones, Hong, Mozaffarian, Van Horn & Arnett, 2010).
The teaching strategies that will be used during the project are visual aids, discussions, and flyers. Visual aids are good teaching strategies because they increase the level of recalling among individuals, though they will be limited to only those individuals that can see. There, this strategy is effective for making individuals to memorize what they have learnt over time (Biggs, 2011). Discussions are good as they clear any doubts among listeners and enable them to understand better (Maurer & Smith, 2013). Discussions are however time consuming. Flyers help capture the attention of individuals, though they can also act as a distraction to individuals. These teaching strategies are the best for the project target group as they involve and captivating. The youth, especially needs strategies that are involved and captivating such as these so that they are not easily distracted. A poster board will be used to emphasize the main points and simple words will be used to accommodate those with low literacy levels.
Both long term and short-term strategies will be used for evaluation. The short-term evaluation strategy that will be used is interviewed. Though interviews are time consuming, they yield more information (Elfrink, 2010). The audience will be interviewed on the objectives of the project to access whether the information that was intended to be passed on has actually been passed on and is clearly understood. The long term evaluation strategies that will be used is to compare the statistics on the number of people suffering from heart disease and stroke in the current and previous years and the number of deaths resulting from heart disease and stroke in the current and previous years. These are methods are the best for the target audience because it is large and to accommodate those who cannot see and write.
The teaching evaluation that strategy that will be used is the use of video. A video will be recorded during all the teaching sessions. Using a video is good because it can be reviewed later on. Comparison on the set objectives against what was delivered will take place. In this way, anything that was not addressed can easily be identified (Maurer & Smith, 2013). What needs to be done to improve the performance can also be easily highlighted. This strategy is the best for the target audience to hint on the importance of the sessions.
In conclusion, all the strategies that have been put in place are necessary to achieve the objectives of the project. The teaching strategies, outcome evaluation strategies, and teacher evaluation strategies are effective for the target audience. The individuals to participate in the project are the most appropriate to help in the achievement of the objectives of the project. Community education will impact the community positively and will reduce the number of deaths from heart disease and stroke. Individuals in the community will be responsible for their health and a healthy people will be achieved.
