The utilization of cloud computing to achieve Dubuque’s vision of becoming a smart city is an essential move to achieve such goal. Cloud computing and internet technology has become a major propeller in providing on-demand resources required by cities like Dubuque that made it mature and pervasive. Several applications today that are widely used especially in smart cities are already cloud-based thus if Dubuque has visions of becoming a smart city it has to go with the trend. Aside from these, the utilization of cloud computing can provide leverage of information across the city’s agencies to come up with better decisions, provide coordination of cross agency resources for faster and more effective responses and minimize disruption of the city’s operations.

The officials of Dubuque mean a city that is attuned to the current technological trends where every city agency is interconnected with each other when they mentioned of their want to make it a smarter city. Specifically, the officials mean the proper utilization of what the current technology can provide in order to make well coordinated decisions and responses to issues that they may face.
Question 3: Smarter City Projects
Smarter City projects of the city of Dubuque dubbed “Sustainable Dubuque” focused on “need for more efficient usage of the city’s water, power and transportation resources” that focused on the utilization of real-time data. The water initiative particularly resulted in at least 6.6 reduction on the average of each of the household consumption in water. Likewise, there is a significant increase in the detection of water leakages.
Question 4: Dubuque’s Next Move
Dubuque’s next move to its initial smart projects that improved the city’s economic status is to continuously utilize IBMs systems. This is to enable them to gather more practical real time data that is capable of monitoring how simple and common services are being deployed and from that improved these services.
Question 5: Portland vs Dubuque
While Dubuque is relying on the real-time data and the cloud services to assist them in their bid to become a smarter city to provide them a more sustainable life environment, the city of Portland simulated first the changes that the city may experience by collecting at least 10 years of data on the different services the city provides to its people. Dubuque started with initial “Sustainable Dubuque” programs where they were able to see results within 5 years, On the other hand, Portland went through the usual strategic planning stage and data backtracking before coming up with a decision about to what is best to be implemented.
