It is not a secret that learning process is hard. For mostly everyone it requires a lot of effort, power, concentration, persistence and of course motivation. Without knowing why we are learning this or that subject, without having any interest to it the result is not going to be fast and of course not successful. Planning a lesson a teacher should think about it as lesson is not just a process of giving knowledge it is also a tight combination with inspiration and motivation processes. So being a teacher of English or any other subject what should we remember while planning a lesson, what should we think about to make our students learn, be curious and of course be happy while getting new knowledge, while practicing? There are three main principles for productive and successful lesson:
The material should be accessible and understandable for children. Learning process should be interesting; it should capture and make a student go deeper and deeper into knowledge. If the material is not understandable the interest to the subject will be low or maybe lost at all. It will leave negative impression with it lack of interest.
Each lesson should be interesting and not only interesting for students but for their teacher as well. As it was told earlier learning process is hard but if it is also boring it makes the task of the lesson much more complicated. The students in the classroom and their teacher are one big team. So if one part of this team feels bored this feeling will transmit to the other part. Learning process should catch and engage both parts.
Children should know why they learn the subject. Some students have self-motivation for studying, they have interest and internal power to get everything their teachers give them but some students need to get it from us, their teachers. This important moment a teacher must catch, to understand who needs it more and who needs it less. For someone just a little push, a little praise can become a huge start for advance. Children need to feel success and progress right now, not tomorrow or after tomorrow. Felling that they can do the task, that they can manage with it gives confidence and impulses to move forward. This is a very important moment that each teacher should keep in her or his mind. Being positive, encouraging your students, stimulating for better results is definitely working and the results in achievements are obvious.
Let’s speak particularly about an English teacher. How to inspire students to learn their native language, language that they use since their childhood? Some of them can ask: “Why do I need to learn it if I already know it. I do can speak and write. What else do I need? The task of the teacher is to prove that is not enough.
We need language to understand each other. We are constantly learning something new with it we broaden our knowledge, we broaden our lexicon. Sometimes it’s just slang words, sometimes words of foreign origin but all these words are words of modern English, words that help us to understand others. We can get in different circles of society, sometimes it is better for us to speak correct, literary English, sometimes sink to the slang, all in order to be understood. The broader and richer our vocabulary, the more we can tell others. So the task of the lessons is not just to teach the students to read and write but also to make them understand why do they do it and make them love the process of learning, to teach students to think, then to express their thoughts and ideas and then to make them be able to write. Growing up, we learn to read and write communication is not limited in conversations. We can write letters, essays, stories, articles. Thus, we show our inner world, thoughts and feelings, which are sometimes difficult to speak aloud.
One more important thing that each student has to know is that English is our native language, the language of our huge country. We should learn and keep it not just because it’s as a source of communication but also because it’s as a part of our history and culture. Our duty is to save it for our kids, for new generation. We are the users of the language that is considered to be the international language of different sciences, politics and business. We should be proud of it and be a good example for the whole world.
