- There were several human resource functions that were affected by the natural catastrophe in the form of Hurricane Rita. The major problem hiring and attracting new workers for the job. Everyone in the town was more worried about their homes, than turning up for the job. As a result, even large businesses were unable to attract and hire new workers. The major function of recruitment and selection was affected. Similarly, compensation and bonuses was also affected as there was short supply of workers, and their demand was huge. The third function that was affected by Hurricane Rita was the training of workers. Since, many young people were turning up for the jobs that were available, hence, the managers and assistant managers were needed to work overtime to train them. Natural Catastrophe also affects the forecasting of workers that are required and sometimes more number of people is hired than required which creates disequilibrium in the organization.
- It is the typical HR system failure in case of a natural catastrophe. Since, the businesses are not sure when to start and how many workers they will need, they end up making policies that are not fit for the current or ongoing requirements in the circumstances. This leads to a failure or hanging of the entire system. Since, each one wrong decision affects the other functions, it brings down the entire organization due to wrong planning and inability of the HR managers to forecast, hire and train workers. They have to hire resources which are available rather than what is needed. This conflicts with the organizational theory of need fulfillment, and often the entire organization suffers as a result of natural catastrophes.
