Abstract
The purpose of this research study is to analyze the impact of group therapy amongst individuals from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. The group needed to become aware of strategies to deal with abnormal eating habits and self image issues. Before doing so, the psychologist needed to identify the various forms of resistances demonstrated by the members of the group, and the solutions to these.
The study reveals the different leadership styles used by both the therapist and the co-facilitator. The research paper will analyze the effectiveness of the democratic style versus the authoritative style. In addition, it would show how the therapist allows the other group members to function within the group depending on the circumstances.
This research paper analyzes how the therapist uses transference and transparency to facilitate the ease of discussion in the group. This study will verify how power transference was effective in countering issues group members have related to body image issues. Counter-transference techniques will also so be looked at, and how the psychologist used them to the advantage of the group members.
Moreover, this paper will reveal the themes discussed which include eating habits. It will also assess how the social implications of such habits have an impact on their emotions and thinking.
The study also reveals how the communication processes of each member of the group. The stages of the group members were identified. The study examines how each stage was effective in providing coping mechanisms for group members to deal with eating habits and body issues.
