There have been many cases that have been brought against the fast food company, with regard to the notion that obesity is resulting mainly from what is being offered in the Macdonalds menu. Key among these cases has been documented all the over, especially in 2003, when the judge in a US court threw out a case in which macdonalds had been sued for selling foods that led to obesity. The judge, ruled out that there was a thin line between what should be regarded as personal responsibility and what should be considered as the communal responsibility of the fast food vendors. This has led to the introduction of healthy foods on the menu, to try and help reduce the legal exposure, as well as better the health of the consumers.
The companies attempt to rebrand itself as a healthy food provide, is a very welcome move by all and sundry. Key in these campaigns is the fact that the company intended to portray a greener diet, that appealed to the informed consumer.
Secondly, the obesity epidemic is not because of McDonalds alone. While McDonald is arguably the biggest supplier of fast foods globally, lack of personal responsibility towards health, as well as diet is squarely to blame for the obesity epidemic. There are many fatty foods on sale in all supermarkets, other fast food vendors etc. This therefore means that without a personal call for responsibility on this issue, then all adverts, campaigns and healthy menus will serve no purpose.

A 1.5% tax on the advertising budget is good, especially since it helps deter advertising, while at the same time raising revenue for the country. This, however, is not likely to hit the target, and its effectiveness is bound to face challenges.It must be understood that the major aim of both measures is to reduce cases of obesity, This therefore implies that the consumer must be the target of the campaign. Companies, may be able to afford the increased advertising budget, meaning that obesity will still remain in the high. However, with the requirement that companies add a health warning message on the packaging, is a surely effective method of ensuring that the cases are reduced.
This is mainly because, no one can feign ignorance of the fact that such a diet has bad health implications. Although this doesn’t guarantee that everyone will heed to the advise or warnings, but at least it will be common sense that everyone will be reached with the message that it's not healthy, to consume these junk foods and therefore, no one will blame anyone in whatever circumstances, in case of obesity. At the least, the legal battles being fought by macdonalds will be reduced, since one will buy what they buy, and consume it at their own peril.

In order to adequately address this issue, we need to first of an all understand what the major causes of obesity really are. Research indicates that obesity is caused by a multiplicity of factors such as age, gender, genetics,physical activity,psychological factors as well as illnesses.
The most important factor, however is the environmental factors in which one lives.these include lifestyle factors such as what one eats or how active they are is a major factor to consider. As it's known, people who live in developing countries mainly tend to have thin bodies as compared to people in rich modernized nations. This is because, where one lives is likely to influence the lifestyle that one adopts.
For instance, if one lives in a country where the per capita income is mainly low, some of the diets that cause obesity may be out of reach for such an individual. This means that such a person will be unable to consume such meals and therefore their chances of being obese will be greatly curtailed.A new twist on this trend is many researches that have indicated that people living in the poorest third world countries have lesser chances of being obese whereas their poorer counterparts in the rich nations had a higher probability of being obese.
General trends indicate that low income earners in the western countries were at a higher risk of being obese as compared to their richer counterparts (Truong & Sturm, 2005). In this research, the wages showed an inverse relationship with the Body Mass Index, meaning that people with low wages registered the highest BMI and therefore, higher chances of obesity.
This therefore confirms that where someone lives influences, to a large extend, their probability of becoming obese. As earlier explained, environmental factors such as the meals that people of a particular place eat, their means of transport, their attitude towards exercise, among other domiciled factors have significant influence on the probability of getting obese.
As noted in the case study, poor immigrants coming to the US are likely to become obese as compared to the rich and educated Americans. This is mainly because, although they were thin as a result of natural diet and increased labor in their home countries, the United States provide a unique opportunity for them to be able to access these diets, therefore, by virtue of staying in the United States their probability of getting heavier, increases significantly. These arguments, therefore significantly supports the assertion that where one lives affects how they become obese.
