Bush administration passed the amendments of Disabilities Act that prevents discrimination of mentally and physically people. In addition to that the act prohibits employers, agencies, labor unions and the government from discriminating disabled people while hiring, application procedures and other issues during employment. According to the act, one should not discriminate a disabled person provided they could perform the task. It is wrong to discriminate disabled people in the workplace. The case entails the discrimination of a disabled person that is qualified whom the employer rejects since the employee will have a high hiring cost at the expense of the firm. Don Ricker has recently graduated from college and now has a degree in computer communications. He has since joined the Army as a second lieutenant. He was discharged when he was 25 years old when he was at the rank of captain. He managed to return home to seek employment. Don was involved in an accident that saw him remain in a wheelchair for one year since he had suffered a permanent spinal injury. Don applied for a job in the police force for the position of Director of Dispatch Centre. The applicant committee was interested with his application amongst all who had applied for the job. The only drawback that Don faced was the issue of physical disability that he had suffered while riding a motorcycle on the fateful day. The Police Chief explained to Don that that position would require long hours at it might be difficult due to his nature. The chief spoke to him in a discouraging tone while Don contented that he had the commitment it took for that position regardless of the disability.
The Police Chief conducted an investigation on the causes of the accident that Don suffered the disability. According to the Chief the motorcycle accident was due to reckless driving and charges should have been issued. The Chief suggestion was that disabled people are not reliable, and he went ahead to hire another person. Recently the Chief and other commissioners have been summoned by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in connecting with the case of Don Ricker.
